Kawasan Pahang tengah terutamanya di kawasan Temerloh, Jerantut dan Maran sememangnya mempunyai banyak lokaliti berfosil khasnya fosil Trias kepunyaan Formasi Semantan dan Formasi Kaling. Mengikut rekod, jarang fosil ditemui dalam Forasi Kerum. Pembukaan kawasan untuk pembangunan di kawasan Jerantut telah mendedahkan banyak singkapan batuan berfosil kepunyaan Formasi Kerum seperti yang terdapat di Simpang Jengka 8, Maran; tidak jauh dari singkapan di Simpang Kota Gelanggi yang mempunyai fosil flora ( Flora Gelanggi) berusia Trias Akhir hingga Jura Awal. Singkapan batuan ini mempamerkan saling lapis batu lumpur dengan batu lumpur berkarbon yang dipercayai terenap di sekitaran paya atau sungai kepunyaan Formasi Kerum; persekitaran di mana telah mula berlaku pengangkatan daratan. Mengikut rekod, Formasi Kerum unit batuan paling tua dalam Kumpulan Tembeling dan amat kurang fosil ditemui dalam formasi tersebut. Dari penemuan terkini hanya fosil flora ditemui dalam formasi ini.</div>

Jaafar Ahmad telah menjalankan pemetaan geologi di kawasan tersebut dan telah memperkenalkan Formasi Semantan (enapan laut dalam) dan Formasi Kaling (enapan laut cetek) yang masih digunapakai sehingga kini. Menurutnya, Formasi Semantan adalah dianggarkan berusia Trias Tengah hingga Trias Atas, manakala Formasi Kaling pula adalah berusia Trias Atas berdasarkan bukti-bukti paleontologi. Dari kajian terkini, berdasarkan penemuan fosil-fosil terbaru serta maklumat paleontologi terbaru, didapati bahawa Formasi Kaling mungkin terbatas sehingga usia Anisian, Trias Tengah sahaja, manakala Formasi Semantan mungkin berlangsungan dari usia Anisian, Trias Tengah hingga Karnian, Trias Atas. Ini menunjukan bahawa wujud perbezaan persekitaran pengenapan dan bukan dikawal oleh usia pengenapan. Berbagai cara telah digunakan seperti cf., aff. dan ? yang merujuk kepada tahap ketidakpastian sering mengelirukan dan ini menyebabkan kesukaran dalam pemerihalan taksonomi. Kekeliruan ini mungkin juga menyebabkan ramai geologist tidak berminat untuk menceburkan diri dalam bidang Paleontologi. Berikut disenaraikan tatacara penamaan taksonomi tersebut yang sering digunakan dalam pemerihalan sistematik paleontologi;</span><br /><br />Contoh: <span style="font-style: italic;">Frankites regoledanus</span> (Mojsisovics)<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Frankites </span>- nama kumpulan genus, tulisan italik (herotan)<br /><span style="font-style: italic;">regoledanus</span> - nama kumpulan spesies, tulisan italik (herotan)<br />(Mojsisovics) - nama pengarang asal yang memperkenalkan dan memerihalkan spesies tersebut. Jika dalam kurungan bermaksud spesies itu telah mengalami pengubahsuaian samada nama kumpulan spesies atau genus oleh pengarang lain. Nama asal spesies tersebut adalah <span style="font-style: italic;">Paratrachyceras regoledanus</span> Mojsisovics.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">aff.</span> (atau <span style="font-weight: bold;">n. sp., aff.</span>, atau <span style="font-weight: bold;">sp. nov., aff.</span>) - Bahan/spesimen adalah tidak menepati ciri-ciri asal spesis rujukan dan berkemungkinan adalah merupakan spesies baru yang sebelum ini belum pernah diperihalkan. Penggunaan <span style="font-weight: bold;">aff.</span> sahaja bermaksud bahawa spesimen jelas berbeza dengan spesis rujukan tetapi masih terangkum dalam variasi spesies rujukan tersebut. <span style="font-style: italic;">Frankites</span> aff. <span style="font-style: italic;">regoledanus</span> (Mojsisovics); bermakna spesimen itu adalah menyerupai <span style="font-style: italic;">Frankites regoledanus</span> tetapi ciri-ciri morfologinya berbeza dengan <span style="font-style: italic;">Frankites regoledanus</span> dan spesies <span style="font-style: italic;">Frankites</span> yang lain.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">cf.</span> - menunjukan bahawa penentuan spesies spesimen adalah tidakpasti mungkin disebabkan oleh pengawetan spesimen yang buruk. Penetapan spesiesnya hanyalah untuk sementara sahaja. Digunakan selepas nama kumpulan spesies. <span style="font-style: italic;">Frankites</span> cf. <span style="font-style: italic;">regoledanus</span> (Mojsisovics); bermakna spesimen itu kita tidak pasti (mungkin pengawetan buruk atau cuma serpihan kecil) tetapi menyerupai <span style="font-style: italic;">Frankites regoledanus</span> berbanding dengan spesies-spesies <span style="font-style: italic;">Frankites</span> yang lain.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">?</span> - bermakna pengenalpastian adalah tidak pasti.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">sp.</span>- menunjukan bahawa pengenalpastian spesimen adalah mustahil; atau spesimen tidak dapat dikaitkan dengan mana-mana spesies atau pengenalpastian spesifik belum dibuat terhadap sesuatu spesimen. Digunakan pada nama kumpulan genus. <span style="font-style: italic;">Frankites</span> sp.: bermakna kita tidak kaitkan dengan mana-mana spesies <span style="font-style: italic;">Frankites </span>seperti <span style="font-style: italic;">Frankites regoledanus, F. apertus, F. sutherlandi </span>atau<span style="font-style: italic;"> F. hofmanni </span>dan kita memerlukan kajian lebih lanjut.<br /><br />'.....' - menunjukkan bahawa spesimen adalah genus baru (atau subgenus), tetapi bahan yang diperolehi tidak menepati untuk menegakkan/ menamakan genus baru. Oleh kerana itu ia dinamakan sebagai 'Open Nomenclature'. Dalam membuat perbandingan, spesimen kita akan dibandingkan dengan spesimen-spesimen lain (bagi spesies yang sama), sudah semestinya mempunyai tatacara tersendiri (Synonymy Lists). Friedrich August von Alberti (1795-1878) adalah pengasas kepada kajian batuan Trias yang mengkaji singkapan jujukan batuan setebal 1km yang tersingkap di bahagian baratdaya Jerman. Beliau membahagikan strata batuan tersebut kepada tiga 'formasi' iaitu Bunten Sandsteins, Muschelkalk dan Keuper. Alberti juga telah mengenalpasti batuan Trias dari luar negara Jerman termasuklah seluruh Eropah, Asia, Amerika Utara, Afrika dan Amerika Selatan.<br /><br />Pada tahun 1895, ahli geologi Austria, Edmund von Mojsisovics (1839-1907) dibantu oleh Wilhem Waagen dan Carl Diener telah membina pembahagian skala masa Trias berdasarkan biostratigrafi ammonoid dan telah memperkenalkan kronostratigrafi Trias yang masih digunapakai sehingga ke hari ini. Beliau juga bertanggungjawab dalam menamakan dan memperkenalkan spesies-spesies ammonoid Trias. Ketika ini skala ini sering mengalami penambahbaikan terutamanya dari kajian-kajian oleh ahli geologi Kanada, E. Timothy Tozer (1928-). Skala ini juga dibangunkan bersama kajian biostratigrafi konodon.<br /><br />Skala kronostratigrafi Trias mempunyai tiga siri (tiada perbahasan) dan tujuh peringkat ( sering diperbahaskan). Manakala Formasi Kaling pula adalah setara dengan Formasi Pha Kan Formasi juga dari Kumpulan Lampang, Formasi Shanglan di bahagian selatan China dan Formasi Diem He di bahagian utara Vietnam.
